Winners of the B Team League
Wilpshire’s B team had an exciting end to their season, winning the title on the final week.
With only two remaining fixtures left against the other two contenders away at Clitheroe and then home to Pleasington who were two points clear, Captain Wareing decided to take himself away on holiday, wished his team good luck and left them to their own devices.
A 4 – 1 win for Pleasington and a 3 ½ to 1 ½ win away for Wilpshire at Clitheroe effectively made it just a two horse race for the final week, with Pleasington firm favourites and confident to take the crown needing only 1 ½ in their final match against Wilpshire. Those Wilpshire plucky fellas had different ideas though needing to win by at least 4-1, they duly despatched Pleasington 5 – nil.
As ever the town team is played with fellowship and camaraderie , yet also is competitive and spirited.
Twenty two players represented the B team this season and thanks to those who stood in to help out when there were some away or unavailable.
There were some fine individual performances, none more so than Lee Shaw who was undefeated all season winning 9 out of 10 points available and also his playing partner Martyn Slack with 6 ½ points out of 7. It was fitting that it was this pairing who took us across the line and sealed the four points on the 18th green. Slacky nailed the four foot putt which won their match, thankfully not the other way round as Shawy does have form for missing such putts on the final green!!
However it was very much a squad and team victory led from the front by Captain Wareing and his unassuming Captain of Vice Boswell.
Much thanks to Dave our chef for his title winning and varied meals every Wednesday during the summer, the opposition were all extremely complimentary. Thanks also to all the bar staff and to Walter too for his encouragement. Special thanks to all our green staff, especially our man on the inside Jumpy with the set up of the course and pin positions for the final match of the season.
Well done!
